Yeah, for a long time, I have held the misconception that VRChat was a VR-only game. Boy, am I glad I'm wrong.
This is a little weird, but I got into VRChat because of Sora The Troll, a Japanese YouTuber who makes skits comparing real-life Japanese people and anime characters, extreme Japanese lessons, and, of course, videos of him trolling people in VRChat.
My favorite ones are where he attacks people while wearing a VR headset, which, interestingly, were my main motivations. I wanted to "kancho" people and demonstrate my boxing skills...but I don't have a VR headset. -_-
The YouTube algorithm also showed me some videos of Genshin Impact fans in VRChat, and I thought, I may not be able to cosplay my favorite character Xingqiu in real life, but I can definitely do it in VRChat! So, say hello to me!
What Worlds Do You Hang Out In?
Relaxing worlds, in general, are my favorite. Being a lazy martial artist, I enjoy places where I can find inner peace.
Specifically, I enjoy beaches, bedrooms, hotels, and living rooms.
After seeing that these worlds exist, I found a third purpose for being in VRChat: to be in places that would be impossible to be in due to the worldwide lockdown and the fucking Wuhan coronavirus.
I also hang out in Genshin Impact worlds, mainly Mondstadt, but I've also been to the ridiculously popular Angel's Share and Cathedral.
Most people hang out at the Anemo Archon statue because of the memes associated with the statue itself and with Venti and Zhongli, but I prefer the marketplace the most because that's where I do the vast majority of my non-combat activities in Genshin Impact.
The Angel's Share is not up to my taste, to be honest. People in there sound like they're drunk, spouting nonsense that I feel like only gang members can understand. Also, I just like the bright atmosphere of the Mondstadt outdoors.
Worlds that aren't in these categories are the "Know Your Friends Better Dice Game" and Udon Boxing.
Now I really wish I had a VR headset because I talked with NachoPizza about a hypothetical Mondstadt brawl for whoever is gonna get Jean as his girlfriend.
But screw that. Buying Hytale is my priority.
Have You Made Any Friends?
Disclaimer
I'm not here in VRChat to get any romantic relationships. VRChat is not designed to be a dating site.
Miyako
Note that this is part of her username. I included her here with permission.
I was bored as usual, so I went to a Genshin Impact avatar world and messed around by voicing the characters. I didn't really care if people were impressed by my voice acting; I just did it for fun. I felt like actually controlling the characters outside of Genshin Impact would help me get in character.
Miyako and her friend, Antico (used with permission), heard me and openly expressed interest in my voice acting, so, not gonna lie, I flexed more voices at them. My favorite one to voice was Xiao because of my real-life anger issues, to which she said, "You have my respect."
Anyway, some background on Miyako: She's an Italian cosplayer, artist, musician, and, of course, weeb who watches a lot of Demon Slayer and Sailor Moon. She knew quite a lot of English, so I was able to fully utilize my English skill (being a tutor for Japanese students lololol). She has played Genshin Impact for 3 months starting with the Ganyu Event Wish. She's currently saving for Ayaka.
(Unfortunately, Antico does not know as much English.)
Her husbando is Chongyun, which, for me, is easy to mimic, so I wasn't able to help myself. I said his Chat: The Art of Exorcism line and added a part about popsicles, so she practically melted.
Though I mainly flexed my voice acting in the afternoon, I met her again later at night. Instead of voice-acting because my parents were asleep (they got disturbed anyway because I acted like I was teaching), we mainly talked about games and real life.
She was in a Yandere Simulator avatar world at the time, so, naturally, we talked about the game. I voice-acted Ayano Aishi, Budo Masuta, and YandereDev a little, I talked about how Kuroko Kamenaga and Keqing share the same voice actress (Kayli Mills), and she told me Oka Ruto is her favorite rival. She thinks my Yandere Simulator waifu, Amai Odayaka, is cute. Aaand...when she swapped to Osana, I swapped to Tartaglia and pretended to threaten to kill her.
Overall, Miyako was very friendly to me. When she briefly mentioned her boyfriend, I casually mentioned that I'm single and I wish all the best for her and her boyfriend. She assured me that I will be able to find the right girl for me.
Moral lesson? Sometimes, you find friends in really weird situations like voice acting. Take opportunities whenever they present themselves to you...like a thief.
(Note that this doesn't work if you use it as a "tactic" for the sole purpose of getting friends. Remember, my main purpose for voice-acting in VRChat was to train my voice.)
Oh yeah. I couldn't help myself, so I asked permission to talk about her in my blog and she said yes. She saw my Rosaria pull attempts and said my writing was very good.
To Miyako: I hope you get better at what you do. I'm happy that my writing and voice acting have inspired you.
Wolf Voice
I haven't asked for his permission to be included in my blog, so I'll give him the fake name "Wolf Voice".
Wolf Voice said hi to me from behind while I was casually exploring Mondstadt...and I mistook his real voice for an impression of his avatar, Razor, because I wasn't paying close attention. I was pulling an all-nighter at the time.
Of course, he said he wasn't roleplaying...and then told me that people tell him that all the time.
I can't remember how we introduced ourselves, but much of our conversation was about Genshin Impact.
He's an AR 35 player if I'm not mistaken. He just finished the Liyue story.
His usual team is Razor, Anemo Traveler, Barbara, and Xiangling.
Wolf Voice is actually the first player I've seen who does not play according to the meta. He just plays the characters he likes while most of his other friends are meta slaves.
I guess I've been watching too many Genshin Impact guides.
I feel bad for instinctively telling him to get Bennett, not gonna lie.
We discussed waifus briefly. He thinks Noelle is cute, but he's not super into romance in general, I think.
I replied to him with my desire to drown Amber because Valeria Rodriguez, Sucrose's English voice actress, ships Amber and Sucrose. He got confused by my logic and...not gonna lie, hearing him narrate my own thoughts made me LOL big-time at my own logic.
(Why drowning? Because it's a Yandere Simulator elimination method, Hydro is super effective against Pyro, and mah boi Tartaglia recommends it.)
The next time we met, we talked about life in general, but I can't talk about it here without his permission. I feel like what we talked about might be too sensitive.
I will tell you that we took a turtle trip in the Deep Blue world where we dove underwater.
Coincidentally, Bennett and Xingqiu share the same English voice actress, Cristina Valenzuela, so I felt like I was fueling the Bennett x Razor ship that originated in the Windblume Festival.
I don't plan on making any more friends in VRChat, though. My focus is exploring worlds and feeling relaxed.
I want to hang out with some of my old real-life friends, though.
Do You Plan to Troll Just Like Sora The Troll?
Definitely, but I want to keep it light with a minimal annoyance factor.
I usually only troll in Mondstadt as a hilichurl (PC)/garbage man (Quest). I take the Mondstadt NPCs' positions and say their voiced lines, most notably Timaeus's "Ah, ancient alchemy truly is fascinating." because people talk a lot near the fountain at the marketplace area.
I can also do Sara's "Today's recommendation is the steak.", Wagner's "Take your pick. You'll find no second-rate items at Wagner's.", and the dialogue of the Fatui members near the Teleport Waypoint, "Have you heard? The Rite of Parting..." "The Rite of Parting? Did something terrible happen again?"
When someone is exploring, I try to intercept them when they're about to reach a place that has an NPC whose voice I know, such as Shiliu's "Jewels from Liyue! Come take a look!"
I don't wanna copy much of what Sora The Troll does, even if I become fluent in Japanese. However, I WOULD teach boxing then challenge people to fights with my Tartaglia avatar.
Avatars I Use and When
I mostly keep Genshin Impact avatars for roleplay purposes.
A handful of others are from Fire Emblem and Yandere Simulator, including Ayano Aishi, Budo Masuta, Dimitri, Gema Taku, Midori Gurin, and male Robin.
The ones I use the most are Sucrose and Zhongli.
Sucrose because, since she's a shy alchemist, I use it to indicate I'm not interested in talking to the crowds of weirdos.
Zhongli because people REALLY like my Zhongli voice. (Probably not so much when I say Nazeem's line: "Do you get to the Cloud District very often? Oh, what am I saying--of course you don't.")
I usually use Tartaglia when I'm either being flirty or I'm about to fight or be fought. Griffin Burns is famous for making covers of songs, mainly love songs, using Tartaglia's voice.
I use Dimitri when I'm roleplaying either Dainsleif or Dimitri. I try to mash up the two characters together, saying I'm hunting both the Abyss Order and those who slither in the dark, along with a helpful dose of "KILL EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM!" (daytime) or "I must kill them. Every last one." (nighttime 'cause my parents are asleep).
I use Aether, the male Traveler, when roleplaying male Byleth (both characters are voiced by Zach Aguilar) or the Korean animator Gimnaeng.
The specific Aether I use can swap between all 7 elements, so I use Pyro.
I use Bennett when exploring worlds 'cause, to me, he's the most stereotypical adventurer of all the playable characters.
But...hardly anyone pays attention when I use Bennett. At worst, they tell me to "shut the fuck up." I guess people think Bennett's English voice is meh.
I might consider using Midori for trolling in Mondstadt as well.
For general purposes or if I'm lazy to swap, I use Xingqiu as my main avatar. I think I'm the most similar to him among the Genshin Impact characters because I'm a skilled martial artist who enjoys lore and heroes.
When people engage me in a nice conversation after I voice-act or troll, I also swap to Xingqiu and use my normal voice.
Other situational avatars:
- Jean for yeeting, talking about yeeting, or trolling players with Klee avatars. I once went to Akademi High School and used Jean to yeet a dumbbell on another player in the gym area (where the Drama Club practices).
- Kaeya for when I wanna go fast. All avatars actually move at the same speed depending on the world; I just like Kaeya because of his tall height making him the fastest in Genshin Impact while his Passive Talent 3 decreases sprinting Stamina consumption.
- Razor. I like his easy-to-mimic voice and short lines. I also sometimes try to "MUDA MUDA MUDA" using Giorno's voice...but I suck at it.
