Discussing Hytale's Throwing Mechanics

The May 30, 2020 progress update confirmed the ability for human players to throw spears, debris, and, yes, the almighty poop.

Why am I excited? Because I was initially skeptical of the throwing weapon idea despite the strong evidence: the famous dagger-throwing deadeye pigeon and a screenshot of a spear preparing to be thrown at a skeleton mage.
As you probably know, I'm a spear wielder, and in Fire Emblem, javelins and hand axes are among the best weapons in the series because, unlike bows which can only counter ranged attacks, throwing weapons can counter both close and distant attacks. And they're available in the early-game.
Plus, I don't like how bows and arrows are obtained in Minecraft. Spiders don't always spawn, especially in playthroughs with mods that add new mobs, and even then, spiders don't always drop string. Flint is a nonrenewable resource, and I don't give a firetruck if it's a pitfall to not use flint--I just don't like using nonrenewable resources when using renewable ones is an option. Skeletons can be just as rare as spiders, except they need to be killed in large numbers to acquire enough arrows to last for several battles.
If javelins are crafted similar to how Minecraft swords are crafted using a few cheap and renewable materials, then I'd use them instead of bows and arrows.

Starting with the spear's melee attack: I'm not a fan. While I'm okay with the telegraphing because it allows gamers to see the attack coming, I don't like the fairly long delay between thrusting the spear then retracting, or, as competitive Super Smash Bros. players call it, ending lag. It looks unrealistic and competitively unbalanced for me, especially compared to obviously heavier weapons like the maul in the graphics update and the two-handed axe in "Inside the Hytale Foley Studio".
But maybe it's a Necessary Drawback to allow more time for players with shorter and faster weapons to punish spear wielders who miss or have their attacks blocked/parried. I guess we'll have to wait until the highly-coveted combat blog post for the explanation...

The whooshing sounds of the melee attack and the throw make them feel powerful for me, even though a seemingly regular weapon was used. I kind of like them more than the sounds of the other weapons...

I hope the Razorleaf Rangers or similar law enforcers don't read my blog--otherwise, they'll know for sure why many of my enemies' corpses are pincushions with spears.

Rock-throwing has proper physics? Seems kind of cool.
It would have been "awesome" if it was shown to deal damage to mobs, but the clip only showed throwing at blocks. Perhaps Hypixel Studios played it safe after the screw-ups of the Trork battle clip in the April 30, 2020 progress update...
If it does deal damage, then it opens up a bunch of new tactical possibilities. For example, in indoor battlefields like caves where enemies can pop out of corners, the player can throw a rock at a wall to bounce it towards the corner and find out if an enemy is behind the corner. Enemies that are weak to attacks from underneath can be exploited by bouncing a rock on the ground. And we can probably play basketball.

Why does throwing poop deal damage!? Rule of Funny, maybe?
Also, I expected BuddhaCat's face to be smeared with poop after the impact kinda like how arrows stay stuck on players for several seconds in Minecraft, but it doesn't happen. Aw, man. (If it does happen, maybe only obscure a small portion of the player's view kinda like in first-person shooters when the player is injured.)
But I like how being hit by poop has a unique animation where the player wipes their face with their hand instead of a standard "injured" animation. I'd like to see more amazing details like that.
Looks like my Tactical Uses of Hytale Poop post has potential...

Anyway, some quick and random stuff about the character customization:

  • Hmmm, what's up with Propzie wearing roguish attire? Is he a Jack-of-All-Stats rather than a Mighty Glacier Magic Knight?
  • Propzie also has a sprout in his mouth. Reminds me of the Pancham evolutionary line and Ash's Sceptile.
  • Why publish a Sailor Moon expy in the blog post? Not that I have anything against it, but it was quite frankly amusing. I want the Sailor Fuku outfit (or a slight variation) to stay in vanilla Hytale though because I sometimes feel like roleplaying Yandere-chan in Hytale...
  • Assuming Sailor Moon is the same height as an average Hytale human player character (I've never watched Sailor Moon), it looks like Ferans are officially the same height as humans. I kept thinking Ferans were small like Kweebecs.
To end this post with a bang, I'd like to recommend Skallagrim's spear-throwing test vs. padded armor...just to gush at how amazing I think spears are.
